DIAMOND JUBILEE CONFERENCE and CELEBRATION

Nek Chand Rock Garden, Chandigarh, India "Diamonds are forever, like Rock Garden"

Keeping the Dream Alive, An International Folk Art Conference, Chandigarh, India

November 6-11, 2007, Celebrating 30 years of operation for the public good: art, education and environmental awareness and the 10 year jubilee of the founding of the Nek Chand Foundation.

There will be four conference themes:

  1. Folk Art, what is it? who makes it? what do we call it? Outsider Art, L’Art Brut?
  2. Preserving Folk Art through education, including the preservation, maintenance and dissemination of Folk Art environments like the Rock Garden, private visions and fantasy worlds. Case studies are encouraged.
  3. Financing Folk Art projects - objectives, goals, grant writing, and how to ask for money for folk art projects. Case studies are encouraged.
  4. The role of the Press and Media and world folk art culture. How the press and media can help to preserve, foment and disseminate Folk Art and local cultural experiences.

In addition, there will be an exhibition of Folk Art and Self-Taught Art in the form of photographs from various sites and environments around the world. Additional conference topics and issues can include the importance of environmental education, recycling.

The conference embraces and uses the following terms in the art field: Contemporary Folk Art, Outsider Folk Art, Self-Taught Visionary Art, and L'art Brut.

CALL for PAPERS

Papers are invited on any of the topics for the conference: Folk Art, preservation and maintenance, financing projects, and the role of the media in Folk Art. There will be a session devoted to each one of these topics during the conference. We are seeking a broad representation of the depth and breadth of the world of Folk Art. Send your 200 word abstract to Nek Chand Foundation Conference chair Anton Rajer at rajert@gdinet.com by Dec 1, 2006. Early submission of abstracts is encouraged in order to obtain travel grants. Demonstrations by living folk artists are encouraged.

We recommend that your presentation be visually enhanced with didactic material including slides or digital. Audio visual equipment will be available for the presentations, either in the form of electronic/digital or standard slide projector. Conference preprints are planned of the proceedings. The official language of the conference is English and Hindi, but abstracts will be entertained also in French. Participation is encouraged, particularly by our Indian colleagues. We encourage submission by young emerging scholars as well as seasoned professionals from all nations and all disciplines in response to the four primary topics of the conference.

The Conference is sponsored by the Chandigarh Rock Garden, Nek Chand Foundation, Rock Garden Society, the Chandigarh Administration, and the Chandigarh Corporation for Tourism (CITCO) as well as the Chandigarh College of Architecture and the Chandigarh Goverment Art Gallery and Museum and British Library-Chandigarh.

In addition, there will be a meeting of FORG, the Friends of the Rock Garden, a local membership association based in Chandigarh, India to promote the preservation and completion of the Rock Garden.

Honorary chair of the conference is Mr. Nek Chand. The international committee for the conference is lead by conference chair Anton Rajer (USA), co-chair, John Maizels (UK), Julia Elmore, and review committee includes Dr. Gary Fine, Dr. David Eagan, Paul Matheny, and Ann Oppenheimer, Folk Art Society of America, and Ann-Marie Reilly. In India, the conference coordination committee: Minhazz Majumdar and Kiran Joshi, College of Architecture-Chandigarh and many others.

Tuesday, Nov 6 9am: All day pre-conference workshop on fund raising for cultural projects "How to write proposals and get money".
Wednesday, Nov 7Afternoon Press conference at the Rock Garden. With tea in honor of the Press and Media.
Wednesday, Nov 7 Welcome, evening reception at Mountview Hotel for delegates.
Thursday, Nov 8Rock Garden- guided tour 9 am Rock Garden- noon luncheon at the Rock Garden Rock Garden- 1:30 opening of conference with presentations Rock Garden- 7 pm- musical concert and dancing, Phase III Rock Garden- 10 pm- evening walk through the Rock Garden for delegates by candle and moonlight.
Friday, Nov 9 Government Art Gallery- presentations all day starting at 9 am
Until 1 pm 1pm until 2:30 pm lunch on your own.
3PM until 6pm presentations at art gallery.
6pm reception at Government Art Gallery and opening of art exhibition of Rock Gardens Environments throughout the world.
Saturday, Nov 10Morning bus tour of Chandigarh, the City Beautiful, government plaza, university, College of Architecture, Rose Garden, tour of High Courts interiors, tour of art school, etc. city parade of the Rock Garden floats/ celebration. Open to delegates Rock Garden, 7 pm Awards of Distinction and honors. FORG- Friends of Rock Garden launching and public presentation of directors.
Sunday, Nov 11All-day Workshops and activities at Rock Garden, speeches, dedications, entertainments, bullocks cart rides from the lake (themes include concrete work for volunteers, ceramic work, world peace efforts, environmental education, recycling) and public recognition ceremonies of delegates and speeches. Closing ceremonies of the Diamond Jubilee Conference.
Monday , Nov 12Additional workshops for delegates and discussions at Rock Garden. TBA

Registration Fees: $ 250
The cost of the conference includes admission to all conference events, receptions, workshops, tours, transport to and from Mountview Hotel and Rock Garden and some meals. Badges, conference memorabilia, and conference booklet included. Individuals attending the Diamond Jubilee Conference and Celebration will need to make their own travel and hotel arrangements. The official conference hotel is the Mountview in Chandigarh. Connections are available from Delhi to Chandigarh, which is 4 hours north of Delhi by first class train or bus and 1 hour by air. We are developing a travel package for participants from Europe and USA. TBA

Cost for individuals giving presentations at the conference will be $150 (regular conference cost $250). Letters of support for international travels grants will be sent with acceptance letters.

Conference Hotel:
Mountview Hotel is a located in sector 10 within easy reach of the Rock Garden and Art Gallery. The hotel has excellent accommodations, recently upgraded, with business center, banquet hall, health club, café, restaurants and travel agency. 155 nicely appointed rooms, all with phone connection. It has an elegant international feeling with wonderful Indian service and friendliness within a park-like setting. 20 minute drive from the airport and 10 minutes from the railway station. You will not be disappointed.
